Jeanne Yvonne
Sawyers Scott
April 26, 1928 – May 20, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jeanne Yvonne Sawyers Scott after a short illness in the presence of her devoted son, Rodney Scott , on May 20,2025. Throughout her 97 years, Jeanne brightened countless lives with her generous spirit and infectious humor that made her the heart of any gathering.
Jeanne was born on April 26, 1928, to Milton Lee and Leatha Gough Sawyers in Charleston, WV. She graduated Garnet High School in 1945 and attended Spelman College for a year. Married at an early age, she was blessed with two children: a daughter, Joyce Millage, and a son, Rodney Scott.
In 1961, Jeanne earned a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from West Virginia State College. She briefly worked for the Farmers Home Administration, a nutrition program in Beckley, WV. After a few years as a 7th and 8th grade home economics teacher in Spring Branch, WV, she relocated in Toledo, OH, in 1968. There she continued teaching at various junior high schools until her retirement in 1993 after 30 years of service.
Jeanne was renowned for her impeccable fashion sense, exceptional sewing skills, and outstanding cooking abilities. Her signature greeting, "Come on in! Can I get you something to eat?" embodied her philosophy of generous hospitality. She had a knack for staying connected with friends and family, near and far, and possessed an uncanny ability to recall all the essential details and happenings. Former students remember "Mrs. Scott" for making them feel capable and valued, her impact continuing through the practical skills and confidence she instilled.
She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Charleston, WV. After she moved to Toledo, she became a faithful member of St, Paul Missionary Baptist Church. She participated in many church activities. In recent years, her health prevented her from attending.
Jeanne was preceded in death by both parents, Milton and Leatha sawyers; daughter, Joyce Millage; granddaughter, Kristen Scott; brother, Milton Sawyers; sister, Maxine Green; and nephew, Irving Green.
Jeanne leaves to cherish her memory her son, Rodney Scott; grandson, Reginald Scott; niece, Andrea Green; and sister-in-law, Margaret sawyers (Milan). She also leaves to mourn many beloved family and friends.
