Jerry Richard Childers

Jerry Richard Childers, 81, met his Lord and Savior on October 26, 2026.

Born on November 28, 1944, Jerry grew up and attended school in Spring Hill, spending his life within the close-knit communities of Spring Hill and St. Albans. Jerry was a man of faith and attendee of Rock Lake Presbyterian Church.

Jerry was a dedicated family man, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a trusted mentor and friend to everyone he met.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Cynthia “Sue” Childers; and his beloved son, Matthew R. Childers.

Jerry’s memory will be cherished by his surviving children, Jason (Beth) Childers, Larry (Debbie) Childers, and Erin Nicole Childers; his grandchildren, Cali, Ella, Mira, Gabby, Nerys, Courtney, Janell, and Landon; his great-granddaughter, Avery; his sister, Opal; and brother, Leonard; and his long-time companion, Barbara Kay Wilson. He shared decades of treasured memories with cousins, Ralph (Barbara) Mann and Carlos Mann.

At a young age, Jerry served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, serving his country with honor and spent time stationed in Germany and South Korea. His military service shaped his work ethic and gifted him with countless memorable stories that he shared throughout his life.

Following his service Jerry spend 38 dedicated years at Herbert J. Thomas Hospital, working as an electrician, HVAC technician, and supervisor. Dedicated to his community, Jerry also proudly served on the Kanawha County Zoning and Planning Commission.

Jerry was the kind of person you could always count on. After retirement, he partnered with his close friend of over 30 years, Mark Urban, lending their skills and big hearts to help local families with household projects and repairs. Jerry loved his land and found great joy in the honest work of taking care of his property and sharing it with family and friends. Jerry didn’t just walk through life; he showed up for it. Loyal, warm, and blessed with a wonderful sense of humor, he stood shoulder-to shoulder with those he loved through every milestone and storm. He will be deeply missed by his family, community and his regular crew - the “Breakfast Club” (affectionately known as the Liars & Drama Club) at the McDonald’s on Jefferson Road, alongside founding members, Roger Thompson, Jerry Pauley, Mike Cash, Jack Clark, Lou Flores, and Mike Spurgeon.

While many hearts are broken by Jerry’s passing, there is a deep peace in knowing he rests comfortably beside his Lord, watching over all of us.

Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
