Obituary

Jewell Vivian Chapman, 80, of Dunbar, departed on her final journey Wednesday, August 19, 2015.

Jewell (better known as PeeWee to family and friends) was born on May 24, 1935 to the late John E. and Stella (Tawney) Nida.

She was preceded in death by her ex-husbands James Spence and John Chapman, two distinctly different and distinctly wonderful men.

Jewell spent the first part of her life raising three sons; Jim Spence of South Charleston, David Spence of Hurricane, and John Spence of Leesburg, VA. The middle part of her life was spent working in various jobs with businesses in both Charleston and Vero Beach, FL. She spent the last part 'living the good life' in both Vero Beach and then finally in Dunbar. Jewell enjoyed reading mystery stories, watching television, spending time with her family, and going to movies; especially with her great-grandson.

Like many parents, Jewell questioned whether or not she was a good mother. To this end, all we can say is she raised three sons who are college graduates, who have all had successful careers, and who have three loving families. Mom was a Cub Scout den mother, a homeroom mother for all three sons, a chauffeur, a chaperone, a confidante, and a shoulder to cry on. She kept a medicine kit that included ginger-ale, Pepto-Bismol, calamine lotion and sunscreen. If she was a bad parent, then we all should be so bad.

Besides her sons, Jewell is survived by six grandchildren: Nichole (Jim's daughter), Lynsey (David' s daughter), and James III, Ian, Chloe and Miles (John's children); one great-grandson, Tyler (Nichole and Paul McCormick's son); brother-in-law, Bill Spence (Margie) of South Charleston; sister-in-laws, Mary Spence (Don) of South Charleston and Betty Daugherty (Butch) of Maryland; two loving daughters-in-law, Neva (David) and Gail (John); and one loving daughter-in-law to be, Correy Beard.

Jewell will be cremated and her ashes will be spread according to her wishes.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to either First United Methodist Church of South Charleston, 905 Glendale Ave, South Charleston, WV 25303 or Hubbard Hospice House, 1001 Curtis Price Way, Charleston, WV 25311.

Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
