Joan Collins, 87, of Hurricane passed away March 20, 2018.

A native of Cresaptown, Maryland, Joan was a graduate of Potomac State College and Duquesne University where she earned her teaching degree. She taught at several schools in the area including Christ the King elementary in Dunbar and Nitro Junior High School before retiring. She was a longtime member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Dunbar. A committed family genealogist, she was a member of the Kanawha Valley Chapter of the DAR and a past officer.

Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Tom, in 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Riley and Julia Yokum.

She is survived by her children, Susan Blandford of Lexington KY, Nancy O'Brien (John) of Ottumwa IA, and Tom Collins (Kerstin Weis) of Atlanta GA; grandchildren, Katy Clifton (Chris), Megan Mitchell (Eric), Julia Schwantes (Dylan), Riley O'Brien, Jack O'Brien (Alexis) and great grandchildren Finley, Brady, Mallory and Leo.

She has also had many dedicated friends who have made the years since Tom's passing much easier and Joan's family thanks them all.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the DAR ( DAR.org ), to the cause of the giver's choice or to Catholic Relief Services ( crs.org ).
