Joe V. Pittman, 82, of Dunbar, was born April 18, 1923 and passed away March 14, 2006, at Hubbard Hospice House.
He was a retired electrician with Union Carbide with 38 years service and served for 10 years on the Sanitary Board for the City of Dunbar. He was a US Army veteran of WW II, having served from the summer of 1943 to the spring of 1946. His term of service included serving in the Pacific Theater, in Japan, the Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal and the Phillipines. Mr. Pittman was a member of the First Church United Methodist in Dunbar and was a communicant at the St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Fort Motte, SC.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Simeon M. and Ida Frances Pittman and his brother, Rev. James S. Pittman.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Pauline Pittman; son, Stephen Pittman and his wife, Mary of Fort Motte, SC; daughter, Beverly Green and her husband, Harry of St. Albans; grandchildren, Harry "Jody" Green, III and his wife, Shannon, Andrew Green and his wife, Bonnie; great grandchildren, Taylor Ann Green and Tyler Andrew Green; brother, Charles Pittman of Westland, MI; sister, Mildred Wilcher of Vandalia, OH.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, March 16 at First Church United Methodist, Dunbar, with the Rev. Dr. Okey B. Harless officiating. Burial with military rites by the American Legion Post 61, Clendenin will follow in Grandview Memorial Park.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, at First Church United Methodist.
Pallbearers for the service will be Steve Rowley, John Jenkins, Gary Pittman, Rod Lathey, Wayne McQuain and John Kaiser. Honorary pallbearers will be Dunbar Mayor Roger Wolfe, former Dunbar Mayor C. B. Rigney, Dunbar Sanitary Board Engineer, Bill Cunningham, Dr. Bruce Foster, Charles Davison, Timothy Pittman.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Gideons International, P. O. Box 7124, Charleston, WV 25313 for Bibles or to a favorite charity.
