The Rev. John Franklin Bowyer, 82, passed away September 25, 2012 at CAMC Memorial Hospital.
He was born on December 13, 1929, in Hamlet, WV. In 1970, he married Bonnie M. Bowyer. They retired to Cross Lanes in 1994 and attended Cross Lanes United Methodist Church. He enjoyed traveling, both for church ministries and for pleasure, having visited five different continents.
He graduated from Dunbar High School in 1947. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Morris Harvey College in 1952. He then went on to earn a Master of Divinity from Garrett Seminary in Chicago, IL in 1955 and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Marshall University in 1974.
Rev. Bowyer began his service in the West Virginia United Methodist Conference in 1955 as Conference Director of Youth. He was appointed in 1958 as Associated Pastor of First Huntington United Methodist Church. From there he went to Basom United Methodist Church, Rupert, in 1961. In 1965 he moved to First Mannington United Methodist Church. He was appointed to Pea Ridge United Methodist Church, Huntington, in 1969 and to Trinity United Methodist Church, South Parkersburg, in 1974. In 1976, Rev. Bowyer became the Associate Director of the Conference Council of Ministry. He was appointed as Huntington District Superintendent in 1984. In 1990 he became the pastor at Christ United Methodist Church, Parkersburg. He retired in 1994.
Rev. Bowyer was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine Wike Bowyer, who passed away in 1969; his parents Garneth Bowyer and Sylvia Bowyer-Haynes; and brother, Douglas Bowyer.
He is survived by his sons David Thomas Bowyer of Prestonburg, KY, Donald William Bowyer and his wife Donna of Jonesboro Ark., and Andrew Carlton Bowyer and his wife Kate of Northfield, IL.; grandchildren Catherine (Todd) Payton , Sara (Randy) Smith, Christopher Bowyer , April (Nick) White, Kristal (Mike) Stewart , Andrew C. Bowyer, Jr., Charles Bowyer, George Bowyer, and Catherine Grace Bowyer; great-grandchildren, Tristan Bowyer, Jordyn Bowyer, Jaxon Smith, and Zachary White.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, September 29, at Cross Lanes United Methodist Church with Bishop William Boyd Grove officiating. Burial will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.
