Obituary

John F. "Big John" Flowers, of Dunbar, went home to be with the Lord Monday, February 26, 2007, surrounded by his family after an extended illness.

John was born March 6, 1928 in Beckley, WV. He worked at the Good Rich Gulf Rubber Plant, FMC, and retired from the Valley Bell Dairy. After retirement, he worked at the Parkway Supermarket for 13 years. John was a member of the Dunbar Mountain Mission Church where he was a former Board member, Devotions Leader and Bus Driver. John pitched fast-pitch soft ball in the Kanawha Valley for 30 years and was an avid WVU fan. He was also a former elected member of the Dunbar City Council.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Streeter and Ocie Monk Flowers; brother, Herb Flowers; sisters, Ethel Raines Fisher, Carrie Paxton and Pauline Corfee.

John is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Sue Flowers; sons, Frank Flowers and his wife, Susan of Red House, Bill Flowers and his wife, Bobbi of Columbia, Md and Dave Flowers and his wife, Mary Lou of Paducah, Ky; daughter, Becky Moore of Charleston; grandchildren, Katie Choate and her husband, Michael of Teays Valley, Jenny Flowers of Eleanor, Joe Flowers of Red House, Christie Hall and her husband, Ryan of Columbia, Md., Courtney Flowers of Columbia, Md., Chris Redman and his wife, Bridget of Springfield, Ill., Chad Redman and his wife, April of St. Albans, Michael Flowers of Dunbar, Matt Flowers of Morgantown, Kendra Burdette of Morgantown. John is also survived by eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 2, at the Dunbar Mountain Mission Church with the Rev. Billy Lucas and the Rev. James Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, March 1, at the church.

Our family wishes to extend our sincere appreciation to all of the staff at the Hubbard Hospice House for the love and kindness they gave to our husband and father in his final days of this life.
