Fulks, Sr.

John P. Fulks Sr., 90, died January 23, 2026, at Sweetbriar Assisted Living after a long illness.
He was born October 29, 1935, in Belle, WV.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edith Beane Fulks Comer and Ira Fulks; his sister Betty Fulks Comer; and brothers, Hubert Ellis Fulks and Ira James Fulks.
After graduating from Stonewall Jackson High School in 1954. He served three years in the U.S. Army as a Military Policeman in Tokyo, Japan. Drawing on this training he joined the West Virginia State Police in 1957 and retired a Lieutenant in 1983 as Director of the Forensic Photography section.
John was the Director of Safety and Security at the Tri-State Greyhound Race Track when it opened in May 1985. In August of that year he became a Claim Investigator with the West Virginia Court of Claims until he retired as Business Manager in 2013 after service 26 years.
He owned Fulks Electric Company, where he held a Master Electrician License for 57 years. He loved doing electrical work, viewing it more as a hobby than a business.
John was a member of the West Virginia State Police Retired Members Association and served as Treasurer, Vice-President, and Secretary for many years.
John is survived by his wife, Donna R. Garnes; daughter, Sheri Fulks Whiting (John); sons, John P. Fulks Jr., and Jason Garnes; grandchildren, Colin Hoylman (Salima) and Megan Fulks Sliva; sister, Gladys Goodson (John); and several nephews and nieces.
A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday, January 30, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar. Burial will follow in Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar.
Friends may visit one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
John's last words would be, "Remember me as I was, not as I am."
