John E. "Sonny" Mays, 82, passed away Friday, January 31, 2014 at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

John was an operating engineer and a member of International Union of Operating Engineers #132, a member of the American Legion, a US Navy veteran serving during the Korean Conflict, and a Baptist by faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Elbert Mays, Sr. and Jessie Melton Mays.
John is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Betty Bailey Mays of Charleston; son John Bradley Mays (Kathy) of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin; daughter, Linda Renee' Mays of Dunbar; grandchildren, Ashley Mays of Louisville, KY and Tiffany Wawrzyniak (Robert) of Elburn, IL; great-grandchildren Amber & Johnny Wawrzyniak.

A memorial service for John will be held at 2 p.m., on Sunday, February 2, at the Dunbar Church of Christ with Minister Donnie Joe Chapman officiating.
