John F. Meadows, age 85, formerly a 62-yr resident of South Charleston, and a retired State Farm Insurance Agent of 52 years, died at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, OH on December 28, 2008 after a short illness.
He was born February 9, 1923 in Spencer, WV to the late Jacob and Emma Meadows and graduated from Spencer High School. John served in the U.S. Army during WW II before uniting in marriage to Annie Rugel on July 20, 1946. After driving a bread truck for Sunbeam Bakery, John started his State Farm Insurance Agency in South Charleston in June 1953 and continued to serve the Kanawha Valley until his retirement, July 2005.
As an active member of the community and long-time resident, John was a former member of South Charleston Lions Club; a longtime member of St Paul United Methodist Church; a member of Dunbar Order of the Eastern Star, #133; a Past Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of WV, OES; a member of Dunbar Masonic Lodge #156; York Rite; Scottish Rite; and Beni Kedem Shrine.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Annie; his daughters – Patricia Meadows of Novato, California and Jackie Meadows of Cincinnati, OH; two granddaughters – Amy Hammer Lykins of Lexington, KY and Tricia Hammer of Novato, California; three great grandchildren – Abigail Hammer and Jacob & Joshua Lykins; and one sister – Ala Kinnan of Roseville, OH. John was preceded in death by his brothers – Hearst, Paul, Calvin, and Hulbert, and sisters – Ethel Simmons and Ella Mattox. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for John F. Meadows will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 3, at Christ Church United Methodist, 1221 Quarrier St. The Reverend Harold LaParl, nephew of the deceased, will officiate with The Reverend Stephen J. White. Entombment will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, with a Masonic graveside service by Dunbar Lodge, #159.
Friends and relatives are welcome at Keller Funeral Home, 1236 Myers Ave. Dunbar on Thursday, January 1, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, January 2, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and at the church, on Saturday, from 12 noon until the hour of services. Eastern Star rites will be performed by Past Grand Matrons and Past Grand Patrons of the Grand Jurisdiction of WV, OES, on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
