Obituary

John "Jack" R. Townson, 80, a lifelong resident of Dunbar, passed away at CAMC General Hospital Tuesday, May 19, 2015 surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness.

He was born August 3, 1934 in Elwood, Ind. to the late John and Marcella (Coe) Townson. He married the love of his life, Margaret Rose Taylor on February 11, 1956, 59 years ago.

John was a retired Captain from the Dunbar Fire Department with over 32 years of service. He served in the Army Nation Guard. He was an avid golfer, hunter, fisherman; he managed and played softball for many years with the Fire and Police departments of Dunbar.

Jack was a long-time sports fan and supporter of WVU, Cincinnati Reds and The Cleveland Browns, He especially enjoyed watching and rooting for his grandchildren's sports teams.

For many years, he enjoyed taking annual golf trips to Myrtle Beach, SC and spending holidays with his family. He loved watching old westerns on TV. He was a 1952 graduate of Dunbar High School, where he was a member of the football and baseball teams.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his sister Shirley, mother in-law Ruby Steele, and brother in-law Cuddy Thomas.

Survivors include his wife Margaret Townson; daughters Kimberly and husband Buddy Ripley of Dunbar, Carrie Leigh And husband Marc Golden of Charleston; brother Gerald "Moe" and wife Mary Townson of Charleston; sister in-law Mary Thomas of Gallipolis, OH; grandson, Ryan Ripley and partner Katie McCormick, Robbie Ripley, and Rease Ripley all of Dunbar; Brandon and wife Christina Golden of Clearwater, FL; granddaughter, Brittany Golden and partner Matt Estill of Morgantown; great grandchildren, Ashley Batton, Dylan Ripley, Jordan Ripley, and Chelsi Ripley; life-long friend, Teddy Stover of Poca and best friends Jeff and Kay Trent.

A special thanks to the staff at the Neuro-ICU at CAMC General Hospital.

At Mr. Townson's request, his body was cremated, and there will be no service.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations may be made in John's name to the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Society, 1248 Greenbrier St.. Charleston, WV 25311
