Obituary

Juanita R. Slater born October 16, 1921, passed away on November 16th, 2010, after a short illness.

Juanita was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Slater; her parents, Willie and Goldie Rhodes of Goldtown; sister, Euneva Monday and brother, Kermit Rhodes.

Her memories will be cherished by her son Gary (Janie) Slater of Cross Lanes, her daughter, Saundra Slater of Melbourne, Florida; grandchildren, Craig (Trisha) Slater of Winfield, Kelly Pile of Dunbar, and Kristine (Brian) Phillips of Hurricane, Tom (Mindy) Moore of Dunbar; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Doris Boggess of New Cumberland), Pat (Kenny) Leaptrot of Goldtown; sister-in-law, Phyllis Sayre and many nieces and nephews.

Juanita was a member of the Church of Christ (Kanawha Boulevard) and later attended King's Way in Nitro and Fairlawn Baptist in Dunbar.

For many years she worked at Lacy Hardware on the West Side. Then she went to work for and retired from the West Virginia Tax Department. After retiring, she worked part time at Stone Thomas in the gift -wrapping department along side her sister, Euneva Monday, and sister-in-law, Phyllis Sayre.

Those who knew Juanita were aware of her love for animals especially dogs. Many unwanted dogs found a safe and loving home with her over the years. Also, she made sure the birds, squirrels, and rabbits were feed and enjoyed watching them in her back yard.

A service to honor and reflect on her life will be held Friday, November 19, at 2 p.m. at Keller Funeral Home in Dunbar. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service. Reverend Steven Rhodes (nephew) and Reverend Tom Moore (grandson) will officiate the service. Burial will follow the service at Grandview Memorial Park.

Her family wants to thank the doctors and nurses at St. Francis Hospital (PCU 2nd floor) and the Hospice Staff for their kindness and care during her illness.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice Care, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W. Charleston, WV 25312 or your favorite humane society.
