Obituary

Julian Donald "Bucket" Burchett, 84, of St. Albans, passed away July 24, 2025.

He was born in Charleston on July 30, 1940. He was a long-time resident of St. Albans but grew up on Tyler Mountain. Julian was a devoted father, grandfather, brother and friend, who enjoyed spending time with his family and keeping in touch with his large circle of friends. He was a devout Christian who shared his love for the Lord through both his actions and words.

Julian was a 1959 graduate of Dunbar High School. After graduation he spent two years serving in the U.S. Navy. He spent his professional career with the United States Postal Service where he worked until his retirement. Initially Julian was a mail carrier for both Dunbar and St. Albans where he made lasting and treasured friendships with many of those on his routes. Later, he served as Postmaster to both the Ridgeview and Sod Post Offices. After his retirement, Julian once again served his community by working part-time for Putnam Aging, delivering Meals-on-Wheels, providing transportation to dialysis treatment and working at the Hansford Senior Center. Julian also volunteered many hours at the Manna Ministries Outreach Center in St. Albans.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Brady Burchett and Lola Walker Burchett; and his two brothers, Glenn and Calvin Burchett.

Julian is survived by daughters, Elissa Beth Strickland (Shawn) of Oak Hill, and Tara Alison Appler (John) of Hampstead, MD; and grandchildren, Madison, Elijah and Zoe.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Shawn Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Friends may visit two hours prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
