Obituary

Lawrence Reed McElhinny, 92, of Dunbar, formerly of Frame, passed away on Monday, May 25, 2009 peacefully at home.

Lawrence was born September 16, 1916 in Middleport, Ohio to Howard Ellsworth McElhinny and Jessie Gandee McElhinny. The family moved to Charleston in the mid '20's. He was a graduate of Charleston High School and West Virginia University. At Charleston High School, he was a member of the Championship Track Team in 1934 and 1935. He was the winner of the State Mile Race in 1935. He was a letterman on the West Virginia University Track Team. He was one of the original members of the Frame Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Kanawha Masonic Lodge #20. He attended First Presbyterian Church of South Charleston. He retired from DuPont Belle Works Plant after 37 years of service.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Wayne; his first wife, Margaret Darlington; and a nephew, Jerry McElhinny.

Mr. McElhinny is survived by his second wife, Bea Bourquin Zinn McElhinny; sister, Nan Elinor Farrell of Lexington, South Carolina; daughters, Martha Hunt of Greenville, South Carolina, Donna Brace of Brooksville, Florida, Sue Ellen Compton of Frederick, Maryland, and Risé Bailey of Charleston; nephews, Wally Farrell of St. Albans, Craig McElhinny of Parkersburg; niece, Judy Miller of South Charleston; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 30, at First Presbyterian Church of South Charleston, with the Rev. Gary McGrew officiating. Entombment will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, June 1, at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, May 29, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
