Lee Cortes Dyess, Jr., 24, of Charleston, departed this life on July 24, 2016.
Lee leaves behind many accomplishments to cherish such as: 2013 Hometown Heroes Boxing Multi-state Middleweight Champion; 2014 HHB Multi-state Middleweight Champion; 2015 HHB Multi-state Middleweight Champion; 2015 HHB "Boxer of the Year Award"; competed in the 2016 Olympic Qualifier Trials in Tennessee; won the HHB Challenge Championship in the Welterweight and Middleweight divisions several times. He won several "Fighter of the Night" awards at different events.
Lee was a 2011 Capital High School graduate, and attended Marshall University in 2012.He was a dedicated Christian and member of King Of Glory International Ministries in Charleston led by Apostle Tina Beatty. Lee was a hard worker for the City of Charleston, as well as an active volunteer in the community. He was truly a "Hometown Hero" which ironically was the name of the gym to which he belonged to and trained under the guidance of Mr. Gary E. Tony, Mr. Tony Dunlap, and Mr. Albert "Leba" Carter.
Lee will be remembered for his beautiful smile, humble personality, hard work ethic, compassionate manner, and most of all his determination and inspiration.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lisa N. Jones; brother, J'shaad "00" Jones; grandfather, Orville Glen Jones; great-grandmother, Lillian Hunter; aunt, Altheda "Porky" March; uncles, Henry R. Rinehart Jr. and Eddie Ray Dyess.
Lee is survived by his loving grandmother, whom he described as his everything, Ms. Helen L. Rinehart; grandmother, Henrietta Dyess; brothers, De'Recco Lynch, Cameron Jones, and Zachariah Dyess; sister, Jurnee M. Dyess; aunts, Patrice "Tre" Rinehart, Michelle Rinehart, Karen Rinehart, Sharon Dyess, Carmen Jones and Mickey Jones all of Charleston, Catherine Johnson of Cleveland Ohio, Mitzi (Mike) Kincaid of Marietta, Ga. and Anita (Perry) Davis of Charleston; uncles, Orville Kincaid, Harry "Tony" Johnson, Harold and Darryl Jones all of Charleston, Jimmy (Toi) Johnson of Newark, New Jersey, Tony Dyess, Calvin Dyess and Petey (Loretta) Dyess; step-father, T-Payne; father, Lee Cortes Dyess Sr. (Renee Cochran) of Charleston; loving extended family, Ernest "Tyrone" & Gloria "Cookie" Johnson of Charleston. Also left to cherish Lee's memory are his special siblings, DeyArtis Dudley Sr., Damien Cade, David Huynh, Nicholas, Cierra, Cj and Brittany Smith, Courtney Campbell and Chayden Johnson. He also leaves behind a host of family, friends, nieces, nephews, cousins, and teammates.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2, at King of Glory International Ministries, Charleston with Apostle Tina Beatty officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston.
Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the church.
