Obituary

Lois Hanger Pierce Waugh died peacefully early Tuesday morning, September 26, 2006, at Hubbard Hospice, in Charleston.

A member of the Dunbar Church of Christ, Mrs. Waugh spent her life caring for her family and devoted to her faith. She was 86.

Born in Washington, DC on Christmas day in 1919, Lois spent almost her entire life as a resident of Charleston. The granddaughter of James E. Hanger (a Civil War amputee who invent the artificial leg), Lois was raised by her aunt and adopted mother, Russell H "Mom" Pierce. a midwife. She attended Charleston High School and married William Arthur Waugh Jr. in 1939. They had two children, Lois Lee and David Arthur. From 1952 onward, Lois lived with her family in the house her husband built on Zabel Drive, not far from where she was raised. When daughter, Lois Lee, died in 1968, she and Bill raised her son, James Philip Ryan.

Preceded in death by William Arthur, Lois is survived by son David Arthur (Snellville, GA) and grandsons James Philip Ryan (Snellville, GA), William Arthur Waugh III (Dacula, GA) and John David Waugh (Washington, DC). She has 7 surviving great-grandchildern: Austin Ryan,Kori Waugh, Codi Waugh, Keeli Waugh, Casli Waugh, Kolbi Waugh and Liam Waugh.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, September 28, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Minister Donnie J. Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, September 27, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
