Mrs. Lottye W. Russell, of Dunbar, formerly a college professor and foreign language supervisor in Virginia, died Wednesday, February 22, 2012.
Born in Beauford, South Carolina and a Cum Laude graduate of South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, she earned a Master's degree at Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia. She served on the faculty of Saint Paul's College in Lawrenceville, Virginia and in the public schools of Hampton, Virginia. She later became Assistant Supervisor of Foreign Languages for the State of Virginia and Supervisor of Foreign Languages in the City of Hampton, Virginia.
Her academic credentials include additional graduate work at Boston University, the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and studies in French at the University of Strasbourg, France.
She was a member of St. Christopher Episcopal Church in Charleston. Formerly, at St. James Episcopal Church, she served as treasurer of the Episcopal Church Women.
In the Diocese of Southern West Virginia, she served for many years as Secretary of the Episcopal Church Women. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Kanawha County Library Association and was a member of the West Virginia Board of Social Work Examiners.
She was an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and served as Basileus of Alpha Omicron Omega Chapter in Institute. Additionally, she served on several committees at the sorority's national level. She was also a member of Links, Incorporated and served as President of the Charleston-Institute chapter.
Always a devoted wife and mother, Lottye Russell is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Dr. James A. Russell, Jr., her son, James Alvin, III and her daughter, Charlotte Russell Coley.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, February 25, at the St. Christopher Episcopal Church, 821 Edgewood Drive, Charleston, with the Reverend Melissa E. Remington officiating. Burial will take place in the St. Paul's Memorial Chapel Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Virginia.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the St. Christopher Episcopal Church.
