Obituary

Lulu Daphene Dickey Hensley, 82, of Dunbar, passed away Friday, April 13, 2012 at the WV VA Nursing Facility in Clarksburg, due to complications of Parkinson's Disease.

She was formerly a resident of Quarry Manor Assisted Living in Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Dickey, mother, Mabel Alt Dickey and infant brothers, Tommy and Buddy.

She was born in Dayton, OH on September 21, 1929. After graduating from Miamisburg High School in Miamisburg, OH in 1947, she worked for General Motors before joining the US Navy where she met her future husband. They moved to West Virginia to raise their children. She graduated cum laude from WV State College in 1973 with a Bachelors of Arts degree and went on to teach home economics at Dunbar High School. As a senior class sponsor, she took her students to Florida and the Bahamas on senior trips and she catered many proms and social functions at the school. She was assistant coach for the boys wrestling team for several years and also girls track coach. Her girls were WV State Track Champions in 1981. She continued her education and earned a Master's Degree from Marshall University. Her teaching career took her to Vilseck and Darmstadt, Germany, where she lived until her retirement. She returned to WV and taught at Sherman High School in Seth, and also did substitution work at the Job Corps in Charleston.

An avid traveler, her second favorite thing to do, next to teaching, was visit other countries to experience their culture. Her grandchildren benefited from her love of travel, she took them on many summer vacations to the beach and Disney World. She also loved watching Mountaineer football and traveled to attend many bowl games.

She is survived by her sons, David Hensley and wife, Terri of Winfield, Dennis Hensley of Bloomington, MN, Richard Hensley of Pasco, WA; daughter, Diana Kuhn and husband, George of St. Albans, brothers, James Dickey and wife, Rosie of Ft. Myers, FL, Richard "Dick" Dickey and wife, Winnie of Carlisle, OH, Eddie Dickey of St. Marys, OH; grandchildren, Barbara Hager and husband, Mark of Wilmington, NC; Leslie Hensley of Winfield, Ian, Miranda and Chris Hensley all of Bloomington, MN, Eric Dennis of Chesapeake, OH; great grandchildren, Max Hager of Wilmington, NC and Landen Woods of Racine, OH; and many cousins, nieces and nephews all over the country.

The family would like to thank the staff of the WV VA Nursing Facility in Clarksburg for the exceptional care they took of our mother. Your knowledge and compassion are beyond compare.

Visitation will be held Friday, April 20, 2012 at 6 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 7:30pm at Keller Funeral Home, 1236 Myers Avenue, Dunbar.

As per her wishes, her body has been cremated and her ashes will be scattered off the coast of Hawaii by a US Navy vessel.
