Luster Orel Doughty, 87, of Dunbar, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed peacefully on November 16, 2023, at home. He entered the gates of Heaven being greeted by many family members, especially his parents, Melford and Teresa Doughty.
He was born on September 1, 1936, as the only child to Melford and Teresa Doughty. He grew up in the Charleston area, graduating from Stonewall Jackson High School in 1955. Luster retired from Virginia Welding, now Airgas, in 1998. For many many years Luster had a tax business, "Taxes by Doughty", where he prepared tax returns for people. He was a legal videographer for many court reporters in the Charleston area, especially his daughter, Connie DeMuth Surbaugh. Luster was actively involved in the Charleston Civitan Club, serving many times as club president and other positions.
Luster was a Christian, faithfully serving his Lord Jesus Christ. He was an active member of Dunbar First Baptist Church, serving many roles, including deacon. In earlier years, he also was an active member of the Dunbar Church of the Nazarene. He also served on the Dunbar Ministerial Association serving those less fortunate.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, James "Jaime" DeMuth.
Luster is survived by his wife, Stella Ann Sayre Doughty, who he married on February 22, 1958, and with whom he had a wonderful and loving marriage until his death, lasting nearly 66 years; children, Mark Doughty (Cindy) of Dunbar, Connie DeMuth Surbaugh (Tony) of Hurricane, Tracy Bailey (Tim) of Kenna; grandchildren, Brian Doughty (Sara), Justin Doughty (Sabrina), Zach Bailey (Laura), Tyler Bailey (Jennifer), Cody Bailey (Nina), Jimmy and Chloe DeMuth, and Amberly and Cohen Surbaugh; and nine great-grandchildren, Luke, Claire, and Grace Doughty, Ava, Callie and Holden Bailey, Silas Cash, Audrey and Uriah Turley. Also surviving him are many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 25, at Dunbar First Baptist Church, Dunbar, with Pastors David Keeney and Thomas E. Stevens, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Friends may visit two hours prior to the service at Dunbar First Baptist Church, Dunbar.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Dunbar First Baptist Church, 311 16th Street, Dunbar, WV 25064.
