Mark Douglas
Matheny
October 1, 1951 – February 26, 2026
Mark Douglas Matheny, 74, of Charleston went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 26 2026 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mark was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose humor and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He had a natural ability to make people laugh and feel at ease. Mark loved to sing so much that at the mere mention of a word, he would break out into song and dance.
He loved camping, backpacking, and all things nature. Sitting in a chair on the beach or looking for shark teeth in the sand were some of his favorite ways to spend his days. He made a friend everywhere he went because to him there were no strangers—only friends he hadn't made yet.
Mark is proceeded in death by his parents, Rex and Marie Matheny; and his grandparents, Roy and Ruby Matheny.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Beulah Matheny, as well as their son, Dan Gardner (Kathy Goff); his granddaughters, Jessica Thomas (Cole Roberts) and Hannah Gardner (Kenzi Evans); his great-grandchildren, Juliette Thomas, Collin Thomas and Brooks Roberts; his sisters, Jill Rice (Mike), Lisa Collum (Geoff), Lynn Fizer (Rick); and his brother, Chris Hutchinson (Charlotte); along with many nieces, nephews, and friends whom he loved dearly.
Mark found the greatest happiness in the love and laughter of his family and friends. He will be remembered for his kind heart, funny personality, and the love he shared with us all. Though he is gone, his memory will live on in the laughter he inspired and the love he leaves behind in hearts of those who knew him.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar with burial to follow in Grandview Memorial Park.
Family will welcome friends one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
