Obituary

Mary Alice Boyd Carpenter, 90, passed away peacefully on July 27, Hubbard Hospice House West from injuries due to a fall.

She was born September 17, 1927 in Kilsyth, WV as the second of six girls born to William Lee Boyd and Thelma Raines Boyd who preceded her in death. Also there to greet her in Heaven were her beloved husband of 60 years Arlin Dayton "Jack" Carpenter, Sr., her daughter Debra Lynn Hood , grandson David Andrew Hood, her son-in-law A. W. "Bill" Johnston , her sisters Betty Lee Boyd, Barbara Craddock, and Carolyn Brooks, as well as many other family and friends.

She graduated in 1945 from Mount Hope High School where she played clarinet in the band. She graduated from Cadet Nursing School at Charleston General Hospital in 1948 as a Registered Nurse. She would later work for Dr. Ward Harshbarger and Dr. M. Partovi as their nurse after raising her four children whom she loved dearly. She was active in PTA while her children were in school. She never met a stranger and loved God, Family, and Country. She loved bowling, playing tennis, riding her bike, reading, calling in to talk radio shows, and writing letters to the Charleston Gazette. She was a big fan of Lawrence Welk and even got to conduct Lawrence Welk Orchestra in Branson, MO on one of her many trips with her daughter Dena and son-in-law Bill. Mom had a great sense of humor and a beautiful smile and was proud at 90 years old that she still had her own teeth.

She is survived by her sons, Arlin Dayton "Junkie" Carpenter, Jr. and daughter-in-law Barbara of Charleston, Donald Lee Carpenter and his fiancée, Susan Blackhurst of Dunbar; her daughter, Dena Louise Johnston and her fiancé, Robert Campbell of Dunbar; grandchildren, Jonathan Carpenter (Susannah) and Jeffrey Carpenter (Jami) both of Charleston and Dr. Michelle Reisinger (Michael) of Pine Island, MN and Brian Carpenter of Spring Valley, MN; great-grandchildren, Emma Carpenter, Alex Carpenter, Megan Carpenter, and Kayla Carpenter all of Charleston, Emily Reisinger and Ethan Reisinger both of Pine Island, MN, Brooklynn Carpenter of Spring Valley, MN; her sisters, Edna Jean Hawkins and brother-in-law, Dave of Middletown, DE, and Connie Cox and brother-in-law James Cox of Bluefield, VA and Oak Island, NC; her sister-in-law, Frances Jolly of Littlestown, PA; and a host of family and friends that she loved dearly.

Thank you to all who came and visited Mom, the staff of Sweetbriar Assisted Living for taking care of Mom these past five months, and the staff at Hubbard Hospice House West, for their kindness during her transition to Heaven.
