Mary B. Cavender, 82, of Charleston, went home to be with the Lord on September 2, 2017.
"Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me" Psalm 23:4
She was born January 22, 1935, in Kenna, WV, the daughter of the late Boyd N. Hatcher and Vada Parsons Smith. She was a resident of Kanawha County for the last 67 years. .
Mary was retired from the Kanawha County Board of Education after working 25 years at Shoals Elementary. She was instrumental in developing the breakfast program for all of Kanawha County, and was formerly Kanawha County Head Cook of the Year. She was a former employee, with almost 25 years of service, of Weight Watchers. She was most recently employed with Succeed and Van Deysen Elder Law Office. She was an active member of Valley Christian Assembly, Charleston, WV.
She was a loving, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and will be greatly missed by family and friends. She always had a smile, an encouraging word, and it gave her joy to help others.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, James Waitman Cavender , and brothers Ralph and Doyle Hatcher.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Beverly Branson and her husband Joshua of Charleston, and Barbara Young and her husband Brad of Charleston. She is also survived by three grandchildren, James Grant Lares of Morgantown, Clarissa Alaine Lares of Charleston, and John Byron (JB) Young of Seattle, WA.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m, on Thursday, September 7, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Philip Dunn officiating. Burial will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
