Michael Anthony Barnes, 29, of Charleston, left peacefully surrounded by loved ones on January 7th, 2014.
Born in Shreveport, Louisiana on December 17, 1984, Michael spent most of his formative years in Virginia, where he discovered his love of performing arts. He spent many years hosting and performing in various events in and around the Charleston area. Some of these performances included major roles in Beauty and the Beast, Curtain Call, Ragtime, RENT, Hair, Hairspray, and The Color Purple; all of which were performed with the Charleston Light Opera Guild.
In addition to theater, Michael also earned the title of Mr. WV PRIDE in 2011 and was known among his peers to be a kind soul who never treated anyone like an outsider. Michael had a smile that could light up a room, and an embrace that would put anyone at ease. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of every person who was privileged to know him.
Michael is preceded in death by father, Hosea Barnes and grandfather, Herman Bell.
He is survived by his grandmother, Gladys Bell; mother, Irma Barnes of Virginia; and two sisters Thomasena Collins, and LaShauna Barnes. He also left behind his beloved fiancé, David Beach and brother, Brian Barnes, both of Charleston. Michael was blessed with many friends around the area and a large family, most of who reside in Virginia, but he will be especially missed by his nieces, Mariah (5), KayLynn (1), and Lilliana (1 month).
A memorial service will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., on January 26, at the WVSU Capitol Theater located at 123 Summers Street, Downtown Charleston. Following the memorial service, a reception and celebration of Michael's life will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., at Tricky Fish, which is located at 1611 Washington Street East, Charleston.
Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
