Obituary

Michael Ray King, 67, of Dunbar, WV, passed away on Friday, January 23, 2026.

Michael was born on December 13, 1958, in Dunbar, WV, to the late Robert Lee King and Helen Drake.

He graduated from West Virginia State University with a degree in Business. Michael worked many years at Kroger and Honey Baked Hame Cafe. He loved his job because for, in the performance of his daily duties, he brought joy to people by serving beautifully presented and deliciously prepared food. He always interacted cheerfully with his customers, striving to create a warm, friendly atmosphere, but his passion of his entire life was writing. He possessed a gift for writing. He wrote and published several books of both prose and poetry. He taught, sharing his knowledge and skills with others. He helped aspiring authors discover their talents and potential, encouraged them to believe in themselves, and inspired them to create. Michael founded a publishing company, editing and publishing books by individuals who were just beginning to try their hand at writing—including works that would go on to be reprinted numerous times. Michael established a club for poetry and prose enthusiasts in Palm Coast, Florida, where people would gather to present their work and read excerpts aloud, while others came simply to listen—and everyone came together to socialize. Among the most significant rewards of his efforts to promote literature were the expressions of gratitude he received from many people—including the heartfelt words of several individuals who affirmed that Michael had truly changed their lives. Michael styled himself as a "Book Coach, Award-Winning Author, Professional Speaker." One of Michael's greatest talents was his gift for interpersonal communication. He knew how to speak to people with profound respect. He was invariably tactful and gentle in his choice of words. He had a calming and uplifting effect on those around him. Indeed, anyone who spent any amount of time in his company emerged a better person. For we would inevitably fall under the spell of his soothing voice and gentle manner, and in doing so, we strove to rise to his level.

He is survived by his wife and children.

We are deeply grateful to our dear friend Diane Legg and our dear neighbors, Michelle and Paul Kucharich, who immediately came to Michael's aid when it was needed.

And we are deeply grateful to Michael's son, Nicholas and daughter, Alexandra. They set out from Florida to West Virginia to help their father cope with his illness and make a speedy recovery. But the news of his death reached them while they were still on the road.

Michael will be remembered for his passion of creativity, and the ability to communicate with people which made them better and happier.
