Mildred Stewart Caldwell, 99, of Dunbar, died November 9, 2016.

She was born August 1, 1917 in Jackson County; moved to Dunbar at 7 months of age with her parents, Thaw Stewart and Ester Hanning Stewart (Harmon); and was a life-long member of Dunbar United Methodist Church.

Mildred graduated from Dunbar High School in 1934 (first DHS class); attended Shenandoah College in Virginia; and before WWII worked for Fletcher Enamel in Dunbar.

During her lifetime, Mildred was an active volunteer. Her volunteer service included Dunbar Federated Services (now United Way), March Of Dimes, 4-H Club, American Red Cross (55 yrs.), Thomas Auxiliary (30 yrs.), and Meals-on-Wheels. In 1998 she was awarded WV Volunteer of the Year by the WV Women's Commission. Mildred was an avid gardener, accomplished basket maker, and knitted hundreds of caps for the newborn nursery at Thomas Hospital. She often said, "Whenever I helped others, I received more than I gave." Mildred also enjoyed spending time at her second home in Long Beach, NC.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Caldwell (1969).

She is survived by her three sons, Charles W. of Frazier's Bottom, James S. (Janet) of Adrian, MI, and Joseph W. (Mary) of Dunbar; nine grandchildren, Mike, Andrew, Robert, and Jon; and Elizabeth, Stewart, Helen, Scott and David; ten great-grandchildren; and her beloved brother, Gen. W.T. Stewart, his wife Pat, and niece Michele Medina, all of Daytona Beach, FL.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar with the Reverend Greg Hudson officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
