Mildred Gibson
Mobley
November 6, 1936 – September 19, 2024
Mildred Gibson Mobley, 87 years old, died on Thursday, September 19, 2024 with her family by her side at her home in Dunbar, WV after a long battle with Alzheimers.
She was born in Charleston, WV and raised in Sissonville by her late parents Ruby and Charlie Gibson. Mildred was one of seven children having two sisters, Rebecca and Betty and four brothers, Carlos and Nathaniel now deceased along with Butch, and Joe.
Mildred, although poor, unpopular and ridiculed by her peers as a youngster, she used her feisty nature and determination to become a cheerleader in Junior High and Head Majorette/Miss Indian at Sissonville in 1954. She was considered to be one of the most popular and most beautiful girls you could ever meet. Children who saw her thought she was movie star or celebrity. Mildred would soon be married and give birth to her fist child, Charles Michael "Mike" Hissom. When Mike was five, while working briefly at Big Star grocery store, Mildred gave birth to her second child, Linda Ann Hissom. She raised her son and daughter in Sissonville for almost 12 years until relocating to Wilmington, NC with her new husband Larry Denver Mobley. There she worked for Star News, a local newspaper, as a paste up artist. Soon after, she had her third child, Ted "Teddy Jordan Mobley. After three years in Wilmington, she and her family moved back to live in Charleston, WV. Mike stayed in Wilmington to start a new life, and still resides there. As Mildred, Larry, and Teddy moved to a little farm in Given WV, Linda remained in Charleston to start her own life and family. Mildred was a self taught, skilled artist and would go on to paint many pieces that are still part of the family collection. Her painting skills carried over to ceramics. She could turn the simplest mold into a masterpiece. Mildred was so skilled that her ceramics were sought after for many years creating a small freelance business. She and Larry also sang in a gospel quartet that traveled locally. They would later depart from the quartet becoming a duo that would travel and minister the word in song to countless churches spanning WV and other states. They were popular and respected being asked to sing at churches, weddings, funerals, and many other events for more than 40 years. They lived on the farm for five years before moving back to Charleston. Mildred had a knack for gardening and working with flowers. She seemed to transform every home in which she lived into a picturesque scene from the pages of Better Homes and Gardens. Some say she could "grow a rose from a rock". Mildred was also a wonderful cook and canner. Countless people have eaten at her table for a full spread Sunday Dinner after church or an evening dinner that turned into singing and praising God late into the night. Although, Mildred was known for her flowers, huge gardens, paintings, ceramics, and singing, she was also known for her love of God and knowledge of the Bible. She had read the Bible cover to cover many times. Mildred was a powerful woman of God and a prayer warrior like no other. Steadfast in her beliefs and unwavering in her faith, she was a voice through God that would help many who needed prayer anytime of the day. Many would say her praying for them could make miracles happen.
Mildred had two grandsons, Bronson and Madison, from her son Mike Hissom; a grandson and granddaughter, Aaron and Cassie, from her daughter Linda; and a granddaughter and grandson, Bella and Parker from her son Teddy and his wife Stacy. She loved her grandchildren, and considered Stacy a daughter.
Mildred requested to be cremated with no service. Her family will honor her wishes. Thank you to the ones who called her and visited her through difficult times
Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
