Nancy J.
(Allen) Smith
April 14, 1941 – May 24, 2025
Nancy J. (Allen) Smith, 84, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many, passed away peacefully after a long battle with dementia at Charleston Healthcare Center on May 24, 2025, with her husband at her side holding her hand.
Nancy was born in Forest Hill, West Virginia, and was the daughter of Watha J. and Bessie A. Allen.
She graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School and Morris Harvey College. She retired from Union Carbide after over 30 years of service and then worked for the West Virginia Senate in the Senate Clerk's office until retiring in 2016. Nancy always greeted everyone with her beautiful smile and kind heart. She gave the best hugs but could also deliver a stern talking to when one needed it.
Nancy loved a sunny day at the beach, her menagerie of rescue kitties (especially Jack), a nice glass (or three) of red wine, sparkly jewelry, and relaxing in her favorite chair on the deck of the family camp on the Greenbrier River with her husband, Fred. Most of all, she loved her family. Known as "Grams" to everyone at home, she was devoted to her grandsons from the moment they were born, and spent many hours at soccer games, cross-country meets, and road trips to Morgantown to visit them in college. When they married, she loved their wives with the same devotion.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Peggy J. Conner.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Fred Smith; daughter, Tammy Shamblin; grandsons, Bryan Shamblin (Amanda) and Ben Shamblin (Niky); son-in-law, Dwayne Shamblin; her kitty crew, and many friends whom she cherished.
Her family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Charleston Healthcare Center, who lovingly gave her amazing care and were so kind to Fred, and Kanawha Hospice Care, who helped ensure her comfort at the end.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Nancy's name to The Kanawha Charleston Humane Association https://adoptcharleston.com/ , or Kanawha Hospice Care, https://www.hospicecarewv.org/.
Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
