Obituary

While surrounded by her loving family, Neoma Potter Figgatt, 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 7, 2010, at Dunbar Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Neoma was born on June 14, 1916, in Shouns, Tennessee, to the late Zelma and John Potter, Sr. She was the last surviving child of a family of eight children: brothers, Lester Potter and John Potter, Jr.; and her sisters, Faw Potter, Maude Stover, Verona Shawhan, Vesta Pullin, and Gladys Kennedy.

Neoma was just a child when she moved with her family from her native state of Tennessee. She graduated from Cabin Creek District High School in 1934 and continued her education by taking a postgraduate business course. While working at Charleston Electric, she met her future husband, Worthy Figgatt, and they were married on August 1, 1942. After starting a family, she decided to make that her full-time job and dedicated her life to them. The couple moved to Woodrums Lane in Tyler Mountain where Neoma was active in her girls' school functions, PTA, and in her church and community. They had been married 34 years when Worthy passed away on Christmas Day, 1976. After his death, Neoma moved to the Myers Avenue Apartments in Dunbar. There she was active in organizing service activities at the senior citizens' residence. She lived there for 25 years. Neoma was a member of Brown United Methodist and attended Dunbar United Methodist Church while living in Dunbar.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Sandra (Daniel) Turley of West Chester, PA, Connie Turley of Cross Lanes, Jo Lynn (Donald) Parsons of Marietta, GA, and Cathy (Randall) Koontz of Charleston. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren, three step great-grandchildren, one step great-great-grandchild; sister-in-law, Carol Potter of The Villages, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give special thanks to the 300 Hall at Dunbar Care and Rehabilitation Center for their heartfelt care and dedication to our Mother and also to Dr. Chris Bowman.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 11 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Pastor Okey Harless officiating. Music will be provided by Neoma's great-nephew, Tom Nutter. Burial will follow in the Figgatt Family Cemetery, on Woodrums Lane, Tyler Mountain.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, August 10, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
