Nona Lynn
Swagger-Orem
December 14, 1963 – October 14, 2022
Nona Lynn Swagger-Orem, 58 of Dunbar departed for Heaven on October 14, 2022.
She was born on December 14, 1963 to John Swagger (Brenda) of Sykesville, Maryland and the late Virginia "Frankie" Deweese of Hometown. Nona was the second of four children.
She graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in 1981. Entering into the workforce, she was a cashier and office clerk. She married and had two daughters.
In 1999, her world changed when she was hit in her car while sitting in traffic. For the next 23 years, she struggled with health issues.
Despite her desperate situation, Nona always had a positive outlook and would listen, offer advice and help in any way that she could. She was a friend to everyone she met and they all have fond memories of her laughing, smiling and being positive. She was strong willed and extremely independent and didn't want to ask for help unless it was absolutely necessary. She wanted to live in her own apartment and wouldn't dream of living with someone else. She didn't want to be a burden to anyone.
Nona loved life and wanted to be around to see the cold days of winter. She loved watching the snow fall in West Virginia. She looked forward to and loved attending the Reed family reunion. She loved music and especially karaoke. Nona also loved crafting, crocheting and would pass the time gaming.
She attended Rock Branch Independent Church whenever she could and would stream services when she couldn't.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her step-brother, Jason Swagger of MD.
Nona is survived by her father; daughters, Jenn Morla (Jean Carlos) of the Dominican Republic and Candace James of Charleston; siblings, Greg Swagger (Melinda), of Charleston, Sheila Rosemond (Rod) of Houston, TX, and Regina Tipton (Dwayne) of Dunbar; step-sister, Mandy Starner (Mike) of Westminster, MD. She was blessed with three grandchildren, Hannah Morla, Nehemiah James and Isaiah James. She loved them and sacrificed to spoil them, they were the true lights of her life. Nona is also survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews that she loved and kept in constant touch with them. Although a long distance between them, she had a special relationship with nephew Cory (Karyme) and Baby CJ.
The family would like to thank all of the home health aids, CNAs, nurses doctors, specialists and paramedics that would help to ensure her quality of life for all of these years.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, October 21, at Rock Branch Independent Church, Nitro. Burial will follow in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.
Friends may visit one hour prior to the service at the church.
Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
