Nora Mildred
Holley
August 23, 1935 – February 2, 2022
NORA MILDRED HOLLEY, affectionately known as "Millie" or "Miss Millie," 86, of Cross Lanes, met her Savior face to face on Wednesday, February 2, 2022.
She was born on August 23, 1935, to the late Eldridge and Nona Landers. Millie was no stranger to hard work. She was raised to pull her weight on the family farm in Sissonville, tending to the animals, putting up hay or working in the garden – whatever needed to be done. The work ethic that was instilled in her from a young age would stay with her throughout her life. She held many different roles, eventually retiring as a cook from Kanawha County Schools in 2011. Even as her mind began to fade, she talked much about "needing to go to work" or "to go to school." Another place she missed going was church. Her family was so grateful for the In Touch Ministry of Charles Stanley that helped her stay engaged.
She gave much to many, never turning away anyone in need, even if it meant her working an extra job (or two). Millie even continued to work after retirement as a substitute cook but also enjoyed post-retirement activities such as flying on an airplane for the first time to visit family in Florida. In her later years she enjoyed traveling with her sisters – anybody who was along for the ride was sure to have plenty of laughs, lots of silliness, and occasionally an unexpected scenic route. Millie had the gift of giving, never wanting anything in return except a big hug. Her greatest desire was for people to know the Lord. Millie loved her family, her countless shoes, and Little Debbie snack cakes. Her constant companion was worry, it never left her side, but now her days of worry are over, and she is safe in the arms of Jesus.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Herbert F. Holley; and siblings, Kenneth Paul Landers, Johnny Landers, Ray Landers, Bill Landers, Juanita West and Ruth Thompson.
Millie is survived by daughters Jean West (Scott) and Sandy Smith (Shawn); her grandchildren, Joe DeBord (Tiffany), Jake DeBord (Sherrie), Jimi Lynn DeBord, Sommer Casto (Caleb), Savannah Firebaugh (Brandon) and Sydney Smith; great-grandchildren, Elijah, Wyatt, Jacob, Miranda and Lilly; and siblings, Joyce Hanson, Pansy Edens (Gary), Bus Landers (Mary Ann), Charlotte King (Jim), Janie Griffin, Rick Landers; and several nieces and nephews.
She was a loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, mom, momma, grandma, mamaw, granny and friend.
A celebration of Millie's sweet life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 6, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar. Burial will follow in Winfield Cemetery, Winfield.
Friends may visit one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in honor of Millie to In Touch Ministries, PO Box 7900, Atlanta, GA 30357 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago. IL 60601.
