Obituary

Opal G. Thompson, 94 years old, of Dunbar, left this earth with her family by her side at her home on the 25th of June, 2010 after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bertha and Joseph Swanson of Hamlin, and by her husband, E. S. "Bill" Thompson. Opal was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt to her family and a wonderful friend to so many people.

Opal always opened her home and heart to her family and friends that she loved so much always cooking and laughing and making everyone feel welcomed and loved.

Opal loved the Lord and showed this by being a member of the First Baptist Church of Dunbar for so many years and in helping to lead so many to the Lord by cooking dinners for her church as head deaconess. Opal was active in the Dunbar Women's Club for many years. She had been a Dunbar resident for fifty years.

Opal leaves behind her daughter and caregiver, Janie Moore-Slater and husband, Gary Slater of Cross Lanes and daughter, Joyce Thompson who resided with her mother in Dunbar. Opal was also survived by her grandson, the Rev. Tom Moore and his wife, Mindy and her very special great grandson, Andy and her special nephew, Brian Dempsey. Furthermore, she was survived by her sister, Sabara Thomas of Ohio and husband, Lowell Thomas who was by her side for many months. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, step-grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

The family wants to give many thanks to her very special caregivers, Peggy Saunders and Marie Giles for giving her their helping hand. Furthermore, the family wants to thank Scott Casdorph of Hospice for his kindness and help during this time.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, June 28, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. George R. Pauley and the Rev. Thomas E. Stevens, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Friends may call two hours prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
