He was born on December 22, 1951, in Williamson, WV to the late Reverend Jasper C. Roach and Mildred L. Roach.Oswald, who was affectionately known as "Oz", was the youngest of five children.

He graduated from Williamson High School in 1969, where he was proud of the fact that he became the first chair saxophone player of the high school band. He then went on to attend Marshall University where he received a Bachelors Degree in Finance.  Oz started his career as a personal banker in 1974 at Kanawha Valley Bank, where he eventually rose to management. He then became self-employed as a certified financial consultant in 1989, where he provided financial services to his clients for more than 35 years.

Oz accepted Christ at an early age at First Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Williamson, WV where his father was the pastor.  He united with First Baptist Church of Charleston in 1975.  There he remained a long-time member of the church and served as a faithful member of the choir, helped to make the legendary First Baptist rolls, and served on the finance committee.  In addition to being a loyal Cleveland Browns fan, his hobbies included spending time with family, playing golf, and reading.  He was also a lover of music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Jasper C. Roach and Mildred L. Roach and his brothers, James. C Roach (Florence) and Masculan Roach (Carolyn).
