Otto William
Portz
December 13, 1945 – March 17, 2026
Otto William Portz, 80, of South Charleston, WV picked one final four leaf clover on his way to peacefully meet the Lord at the Hubbard House on March 17, 2026.
Otto would tell you that he was a jack of all trades and a master of none. He began working at a very young age at the True Temper Plant making hammers and other various tools. Once the plant closed, he had his own maintenance company, General Maintenance Plus, where he did many jobs, but you could typically always find him on a roof somewhere. Otto found his calling as the maintenance supervisor for Sweetbrier Retirement Home. There he was always called Mr. Green Jeans, as he always wore his green uniform. He would tell you that he was on call twenty-four seven not only for the facility, but for the staff. He took great pride in that job and talked about it often even in his last days.
Otto had many past times. When he was able, you could find him at Dunbar Lanes every Monday night. He was one of the lucky ones that was able to bowl a perfect game in his life. As he got older, he took up golfing and always loved a good game of cards. Out of all his pastimes, fishing was his favorite. Otto spent many years traveling with his buddy, Tubby, to Stonewall Jackson Lake to fish for a week once a year. He also loved Anderson Lake and Ridenhour Lake. Even in his illness there was always time for fishing.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Portz and Mary Wright: sisters, Betty Underwood, Bernice Jessup, and Bonnie Portz; and son, Matthew William Portz.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jennifer Lynn Portz; his daughters, Ashley Portz of South Charleston,WV, Pixie Bays of Hurricane, WV and Joanna Showen of Tampa,FL; his daughter-in-law, Terra; his son, Stephen Portz of Seattle, WV; his nephew, Ivan Fraser of Bonita Springs, FL, and his children, Brittany and Blair; his niece, Kim Hudson (Joey) of St. Albans, WV, and their children, Kayli and Kinsey, whom he loved like his own. He is also survived by four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, several other nieces and nephews, and his four-legged companion, Lily.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to Hospice of Charleston and the Hubbard House. The care, support and peace that you showed were only that of Angels, and the family will never forget. Family would also like to thank Stonerise Homehealth and the amazing nurses and physical therapist that helped along the way. A special thanks to A Special Touch for providing caregivers that not only supported Otto, but his wife Jennifer as well.
Those that knew him would know that he would not want us to mourn, but rather grab a pole, bait it, cast it out into the water, and look for him in the sky.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
Family will welcome visitors one hour prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
In lieu of flowers, family would like donations made to the Hubbard House of Charleston.
