It is with heavy hearts, the family of Philip A. Wood, 58, of Dunbar, West Virginia, announces his passing from this life to his eternal life with JESUS as of August 31, 2026, after a short illness.
As a person with “special needs,” Philip couldn’t talk or do many of the simple things we all take for granted, but he surely could smile, and he could laugh that hearty “belly laugh”. Philip loved without condition, which is a rare and beautiful thing that will always be cherished.
Philip took joy in simple things like seeing his mother coming to visit and going for their Sunday afternoon drives, eating a good meal, listening to the Oakridge Boys country music (Elvira) and he took extreme joy in watching the “Dukes of Hazard” television show which featured the famous “General Lee”, a 1969 Dodge Charger. Philip was an avid collector of matchbox cars from the age of two!!
Most of all, Philip will be remembered for being happy, for his love of eating, the enjoyment he got from being outdoors and for going to Krispy Kreme Donuts!! All of Philip’s caregivers, teachers and family members knew of his love for cars and would often bring him some as gifts or rewards. As most collectors are, Philip was always ”discriminating” and he would quickly let you know if he liked the vehicle or not!!
The family wants to thank so many of his faithful caregivers over the years…way too many to list individually. All of you played a very important role in his comfort, his enjoyment of daily life and his security when family was not able to be with him.
Philip was preceded in death by his step father, Sidney Frye, maternal and paternal grandparents, three uncles and one aunt.
Philip is survived by his beloved mother, Charlotte Frye, and his father, Patrick Wood, as well as two brothers, Chris (Lisa) and Robb Wood, both of Dunbar, WV.
Philip also leaves behind four aunts and two uncles: Ruth Anna Parsons of Eleanor (Henry-deceased), Vera Atkisson of South Charleston (Glenn), Barbara Holley of St. Albans (Rodney-deceased) and Ruthe Blackwell of Orlando (David); he has several cousins, nieces and nephews both locally and out of state.
Friends are invited to a Celebration of Life remembrance gathering on September 18, 2026, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Kellers Funeral Home,1236 Myers Avenue, Dunbar, WV (304-768-1217).
