Phillip S.
Jones
April 19, 1929 – March 30, 2019
Phillip "Pip" S. Jones Sr.
Phillip "Pip" S. Jones, Sr., 89, of Charleston, quietly transitioned from his life on Saturday, March 30, 2019, after a short illness at CAMC Memorial Hospital.
He was the youngest of 10 siblings to the Gillie Jones, Sr. and Elvira Nelson Jones.
Mr. Jones graduated from Garnet High School. After graduating from Garnet he was drafted into the Korean War and spent his two year tour of duty in Germany. After he was honorably discharged he returned to Charleston, where he married Ms. Norma Jean Leftwich. They were married 65 years and had four children.
He was employed as a mechanic at E. I. Dupont Plant in Belle, and attended West Virginia State College where he obtained a certification in mechanics. He was then promoted to foreman and retired after 35 years of service.
Mr. Jones was a lifelong resident of Charleston (Rand). He was an active member of the Levi First Missionary Baptist Church, and served on the Board of Trustees and the senior choir. Mr. Jones believed strongly that a devoted Christian must always show compassion toward helping people and that all individuals should contribute time and energy to make his community a better place for everyone. He enjoyed his retirement traveling throughout the Caribbean and Hawaii. Mr. Jones loved the outdoors and he truly enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. Mr. Jones would often take week long trips with friends to the Canadian wilderness to fish and hunt.
He wrote and received numerous grants to hire teachers for after school programs, which tutor students in math, science and computer technology at the Rand Community Center. Because he believed that not a single person should ever experience hunger in a nation of plenty, he was a longtime volunteer and board member, and an Emeritus board member of Manna Meal of Charleston to help the nonprofit organization achieve its mission "so the hungry can eat".
He is survived by his beloved wife, Norma Jean Jones; children, Phillip S. Jones, Jr. of Charleston, Vira L. Jones of Brooklyn, NY, Valencia L. Davis and husband Paul A. Davis Sr., of Institute, Tandra A. Jones of Washington, D.C.; granddaughter, Richelle L. Ward of Asheville, NC.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 6 at Levi First Missionary Baptist Church, Charleston. Burial will follow in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Levi First Missionary Baptist Church.
Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
