Phyllis Townson Matheny, 81, of Dunbar, passed away Thursday, October 2, 2008, at Thomas Memorial Hospital.
She was a graduate of Dunbar High School and Morris Harvey College and was a retired secretary for the Kanawha County Board of Education. She was a lifelong member of Humphreys Memorial United Methodist Church in Dunbar and was an active attendee at the Pete Duncan Senior Center. Phyllis was a member of the Nitro Moose Lodge, #757 and was former Chairman of the Committee for the Dunbar Housing Authority.
Surviving are her children, Craig Matheny of Atlanta, Ga., Cheryl Carter of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla. and Dawn Slaughter of Cary, NC. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Heather Walton and Angela Carter, Stuart, Kayla, Austin, Angelina and Jay Slaughter and Grace and Georgia Matheny and one great grandson, Reed Walton.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, October 6, at the Dunbar United Methodist Church, Grosscup Sanctuary, with the Rev. Patricia Jarvis officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memorial Park.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, October 5, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, P. O. Box 238, Hurricane, WV 25526.
