The Reverend Dr. Larry McCallister, Sr., 78, of Saint Albans, went home to be with his Lord on September 8, 2026, following a long illness.
Larry was born on April 23, 1948, to his parents, the late Lawrence Wilbur McCallister and Christa Arlene Roberts McCallister.
He was a graduate of Duval High School, Lincoln Co., WV; West Virginia State University (BS in Education), Institute, WV; College of Graduate Studies (MA in Guidance and Counseling), Institute WV; and Trinity International Seminary (ThD in Theology), Florida.
Larry enjoyed his hobbies of golf in his earlier years and later amateur radio, KB8TBA (General Class). He was a great fan of the West Virginia University Mountaineers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Green Bay Packers. Larry served as a volunteer firefighter in Cannonsburg, KY and New Martinsville, WV. He also served as Chaplain of the Nitro Firefighters. He enjoyed volunteering for the American Red Cross.
Larry served as pastor first at the Hurricane Heights Church of God, Hurricane, WV; Southwest Church of God, South Charleston, WV; Meade Station Church of God, Ashland, KY; First Church of God, New Martinsville, WV; Dunbar First Church of God, Dunbar, WV; and Browns Creek Church of God, Saint Albans, WV. He preached for Jones Avenue Church of God, Oak Hill, WV while they were searching for a pastor. Before his passing, Larry served as an elder at Abney Street Church of God in Saint Albans.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Diane, of Yawkey WV, and Connie McCallister Morris of Hedgesville, WV.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty Jarrett McCallister; daughter, Melissa (Craig) Hagan, of Georgetown, Kentucky; son Larry McCallister, Jr., of Saint Albans; granddaughter, Rebecca Hagan Adams (David), of Georgetown, KY; and great granddaughter, Penelope {Penny} Adams; one sister, Erma McCallister Arthur, of Barboursville, WV. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
The family extends a warm thank you to the very caring attention of the nurses and doctors at Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston. They were wonderful.
A celebration of Larry’s life will be at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with his pastor, the Rev. Steve Hewitt, officiating and eulogy by the Rev. Marvin Schooler, nephew.
The family will receive guests two hours before the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
In lieu of flowers, you may contribute to Abney Street Church of God, Saint Albans or Browns Creek Church God, also of Saint Albans.
Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
