Rhoda Marcella Headley passed away on September 10, 2011.
She was born on February 11, 1928 in the coal fields of Levale, WV and graduated from Stoco High School in 1948. She worked as a waitress at the Eat Well Café in Beckley and Franklin's Restaurant in Charleston, where she met her husband Sherman Headley, and the Daniel Boone Hotel. She and her husband became the proud owners of the Vesuvio Restaurant and the Chateau Madrid Club and Restaurant in Charleston in the late 60s and 70s. Together, Rhoda and Sherman managed several properties that they owned. When she retired she worked in home health care caring for terminally ill patients. In her later years she spent her days volunteering at several nursing homes.
Rhoda was the oldest daughter of nine children. She made many sacrifices in her early years when she worked as a waitress giving her entire paycheck to her parents so that the youngest brothers and sisters still living at home would have what they needed even though she had her own family to care for.
Rhoda was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Headley, her brothers, Edgar Johnson, Jackie Johnson and sister, Opal Smith.
Rhoda is survived by her daughter, Alice L. Higginbotham and two grandchildren, William and
Larissa Higginbotham. Rhoda is also survived by brothers, J. L. (Ethel) Johnson and Doug Johnson; sisters, Ann Ruble, Dreama (Gerald) Chapman and Betty Ehman; sisters-in-law, Venieta Johnson and Hilda Johnson and one brother-in-law, Gene Johnson. In addition, Rhoda Marcella is survived by many nieces and nephews that she loved.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday September 17, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Tom Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park.
