Obituary

Richard L. "Dick" Dunlap, 73, passed away at home on December 8, after a two-year battle with melanoma.

He was predeceased by his parents, Richard H. and Thelma Greenlee Dunlap; brother-in-law, Robert Wooten; and sister-in-law, Giny Dunlap.

He graduated from Dunbar High School in 1959 where he participated in football and was a member of three state championship track teams. Dick then graduated from WV State (University) in 1965.

He went on to teach at South Charleston High School and was head Track & Field coach for 16 years as well as coaching football, basketball and cross country. After earning his Master's Degree and Administrative Certificate, he served as Assistant Principal at Dunbar Junior High School until his retirement in 1997. For the last 18 years Dick has continued his passion for track by being a volunteer hurdle coach for Winfield High School's track and field teams where he was known as "Hurdleman". Even though he was proud of his state champions and records, his goal was to share his Christian beliefs with each athlete daily.

Dick was a lifetime member of WV State's National Alumni Association, served on WV State's Athletic Committee for two terms, and was inducted into their Sports Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joanna Humphreys Dunlap; brother, Larry Dunlap; niece, Leslie Dunlap; brother and sisters-in-law, Donna Wooten, Glada Humphreys, Jay and Marsha Humphreys; special friend, Coach David Bailey, as well as many dear relatives and friends.

He attended Winfield Baptist Church, Winfield where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 11 with Pastor David Johns officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, December 10 at Winfield Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Winfield High School's Track and Field Program.

Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
