Richard Lee
Harrison
July 15, 1940 – April 26, 2018
Richard Lee "Speedy" Harrison, 77, of Hurricane died April 26, 2018.
He was born in Dunbar, the only son of Muriel (Smith) and Sattis Harrison. He was educated at Dunbar High school where he excelled in track. "Speedy" earned his nickname as he was once known as the 'fastest man in the state', breaking records in the 100 yard dash. He attended West Virginia University via a track scholarship where he represented the Mountaineers and continued to set speed records. Richard earned his Bachelor's degree in physical education and industrial arts.
He was employed by Kanawha County Schools as a "Shop" teacher, where he was adored by his students and colleagues. After retiring in 2000 he continued to maintain close relationships with his fellow teachers. When out in the community, he frequently encountered former students who recalled fond memories of woodworking projects and school events.
In 1964 he began what would be a 53 year journey in marriage with the former Mary Kay O'Dell, originally from Fairview. They thoroughly enjoyed their time together and with their only daughter, Christine.
He is preceded in death by a sister, Rosemarie Sullivan.
Richard leaves his beloved wife, Mary Kay; their daughter, Christine; two grandchildren, Meredith Durrenberger and Nathan Durrenberger and one great grandson, Bryson Young. He also leaves a treasured sister-in-law, Suzanne Floyd of Fairmont. He is also survived by his nephew Dan Sullivan of Hebron OH and niece Diana Sullivan Drake and her husband, Mark and their son Mark Daniel of Blacklick OH. He also leaves a host of dear cousins; treasured friends from his school days at Dunbar High School and West Virginia University; and his coworkers from Spring Hill Jr. High and South Charleston area schools.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the Rev. Rob Laukoter officiating.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, April, 28 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made in Mr. Harrison's memory to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd, E., Charleston, WV 25312.
