Richard Lee "Dick" Shaffer, 59, of Dunbar, passed away Thursday, December 17, 2009.

Mr. Shaffer was a U. S. Army veteran and was awarded the Purple Heart in June, 1969, while serving in Vietnam. He was a wonderful brother and uncle, skilled newspaper man and an avid reader.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Christine Shaffer.

Survivors include his sisters, Barbara Bastian of Spring Hill and Kathy Wanger of Cary, NC; brothers, Mark of Dallas, TX, Mike of Austin, TX, Tom of Columbus, OH, Rex of Sacramento, CA, Pat of Tequesta, FL and Larry of Hudson, FL. He is also survived by 19 loving nieces and nephews. He was beloved and will be deeply missed.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 9, 2010 at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

The family wishes to thank our wonderful sister, Barbara and her husband, Doug Bastian for the loving care they provided to our brother during the past several years. Also, we wish to express our deep appreciation to the Veterans Administration Hospital of Huntington for the thoughtful and professional care provided throughout.
