Obituary

Richard Lee Westfall, 87, of Dunbar, West Virginia went to be with the Lord on August 11, 2023.

His life began on June 4, 1936, when he was born at the Union Mission in Charleston, and was blessed to be quickly adopted by a loving family.

Richard graduated from Poca High School, proudly served as Petty Officer Third Class in the US Navy (1956-1959), and traveled the world on the USS Columbus.  After the Navy, he worked at various jobs, learning different skills that served him well in his lifetime.  Richard became a jack of all trades and master of most.  He retired as a supervisor from Bethlehem Steel.

He enjoyed deep-sea fishing, antique cars, traveling/cruising, playing cards and board games, and helping out as a member of the Dunbar Church of the Nazarene, where he put his handy-man skills to good use.  Richard took great pleasure in creating home-made treats to share with family and friends.  He was known as the "Candy Man" due to his loving, generous heart in giving out candy to just about everyone he met.  His Rio de Grill Restaurant family called him "Candy Grandpa".  During Richard's stay at Celebration Villa Assisted Living these last five months, he endeared himself to other residents and staff with his trade-mark "Candy Man" sweets, and the sharing of his life's experiences.  Richard brought smiles, and laughter along with sharing fun facts he learned from the History Channel to so many people.  Hopefully, he will be remembered for his loving, kind, and generous heart.  Richard strived to follow the commandment of Christ: Love each other as I have loved you (John 15:12).

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton and Fern Glass Westfall; brothers, Wilford and Bill Westfall; and, sister, Rosalind Westfall Seller.  He was also preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Judith Queen Westfall, whom he lovingly cared for during her battle with terminal cancer.

God blessed Richard when he again found love with his surviving wife of 18 years, Doris White Westfall of Dunbar.  He leaves behind his daughter, Tamara Frank; grandsons, Trey and Travis Frank of Maryland; sister-in-law, Judith Baller of Ohio; and, a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family is grateful for the expressions of love to Richard through cards, prayer, and visits, especially to those who traveled from out of state.
