Robert "Bob" Ferrell died peacefully and among loved ones on Saturday, August 17, 2013. Born on January 26, 1935 in Charleston, Bob was 78 years old.
Bob was known as a strong man of faith and a fighter for all of the things and people he held dear to him - his wife, his church, his country, his brothers and sisters, and children and grandchildren. It was rare to find him without an ornery smile, a joke, or a pocket full of candy; it was the joy he found in these simple pleasures that drew people to him.
A graduate of East Bank High School, Bob joined the Navy at age 17 where he traveled the world before settling back in West Virginia. He married Phyllis, the love of his life, on September 3, 1955. As a couple, the two enjoyed dancing (especially the Jitterbug) and spending time with their family and church. They were nearing their 58th anniversary.
Bob worked at Crane (formerly Hajoca Corp) for more than 30 years. He spent his retirement working part-time as a handyman and jack-of-all-trades at Dunbar First Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, playing pool, bowling, Westerns, and the Mountaineers.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Audrey Ferrell; brother, Andy Ferrell; and sister, Carol Taylor Christmas. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; brother, David Ferrell; sisters, Phyllis Remel and Susie Bryant; his children, Marsha Bridwell, Robin Ferrell Godbey, and Mike Ferrell; 6 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 21, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Thursday, August 22, at Dunbar First Baptist Church. Burial will follow the funeral at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.
The family is so thankful for the generous support of so many friends and loved ones. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to the First Baptist Church of Dunbar.
Arrangements are in care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
