Robert M. Fleming, 85, of Kanwaha City passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2007, at home.
He was retired from The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of West Virginia
"C & P Telephone". During his forty-three and one half year career, he served in various managerial positions in several cities around the State.
During World War II, he served his country in the United States Marine Corps where he saw action in the Pacific Theatre and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Mr. Fleming was a member of Kanawha City Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and was a past member of the Board of Trustees and the Usher Committee. He was a life member of The Telephone Pioneers of America. An avid woodturner, he was a member of The American Woodturners Association and a founding member and past secretary of the Mountaineer Woodturners Association. He also enjoyed a number of years practicing as a licensed auctioneer.
A sixty year member of the Masonic Lodge, he was a Past Master of Dunbar Lodge No. 159 A.F. & A.M., a 32 degree KCCH member of the Charleston Scottish Rite Bodies where he served as the Orator in the Council of Kadosh, a member of Tyrian Chapter No. 13, R.A.M. and the West Virginia College Masonic Rosicrucians. He was a past member of Beni Kedem Shriners and the Beckley, West Virginia Elks Lodge where he was a Past Exalted Ruler.
During his retirement years, he enjoyed serving as a mentor in the Literacy Volunteer Program of Kanawha County and reading to elementary school students.
Predeceased by his wife of forty-three years, Mildred Landis Fleming, his parents Clyde G. and Beulah Kennedy Fleming, his grandson Tommy Lee Harmon and his great granddaughter Raegan Ann Goff.
He is survived by his brother, Richard G. Fleming and wife Charlotte and their daughter, his niece, Sheila Balter all of Tucson, Arizona. He is also survived by his son and daughter-in-law William and Joanne Fleming of Middletown, Maryland, his daughter and son-in-law Barbara "Bobbie" and Bill Harmon of Goldtown, West Virginia, six grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and his beloved dog, "Boozer". He will also be missed by his longtime friend Pete McCray and his wife Joyce.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 25, at the Kanawha City Baptist Church, 4500 Venable Avenue, SE, with the Rev. Dr. Gerald Morgan officiating.
