Robert B. Maxwell, 75, of Cross Lanes passed away, Tuesday, October 13, 2009 after a long battle with cancer.
He is now in Heaven with his late father, Charles "Boone" Maxwell; mother, Hilda; stepmother, Jackie, and granddaughter, Kelli Lyn Maxwell.
Bob was born February 17, 1934 in Tanner, WV. His family moved to Dunbar where he excelled as a three sport athlete. He later coached at Dunbar Jr. High.
He graduated from Morris Harvey College in 1956, where he excelled and lettered in four sports. He later coached at Morris Harvey.
He worked at WV State College for over 30 years, where he served as Assistant Registrar, Head Baseball Coach, Assistant Football Coach, Head Basketball Coach and Athletic Director. Bob was an outstanding basketball and football official for more than 40 years. Bob received many distinguishing awards over the years, including being elected to the University of Charleston Hall of Fame, being honored as a Special Alumni of Dunbar High School and receiving the National Federation of Officials Distinguished Service Award. Bob also volunteered numerous hours of community service to coach local sports teams and to support his church.
Bob took great pride in being a member of the Maxwell family. He is survived by his biggest fan, his wife, Amanda. His children include son, Bob Maxwell, and wife Linda, of Poca; son, Carl Maxwell of Charleston; and daughter, Hilda Maxwell and husband Dr. Mark Douglas of Poca. His grandchildren are Andy and Brett Maxwell and Alex and Kelli Marie Douglas. Bob is also survived by his brother Jim Maxwell, and his wife, Madeline; brother, Bill Maxwell, brother, Jerry Maxwell, and his wife, Pam, all of Dunbar. He also leaves behind many other relatives to cherish his memory.
Bob was always quick with a smile and a handshake and he never met a stranger. He was a positive role model for his many friends that will cherish his memory.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 17, at Cross Lanes United Methodist, with the Rev. Greg Hayes and the Rev. Mark Jarrell officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, October 16, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
