Roma Hazel Nichols

Roma Hazel Nichols, of Dunbar, West Virginia (formerly of Beckley, WV and Roxbury, MA), passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at Hospice Hubbard House after a long illness.

Roma was born on September 8, 1949, in Edwight, WV, where she was the third child of six sibling. She is the daughter of the late Harold Douglas and Eliza Lee Nichols of Beckley, WV.

Roma attended school in Beckley, WV, and graduated from Stratton High School in 1967. After graduation, she joined the Job Corps in Huntington, WV, where she learned valuable skills and had the opportunity to travel. After completing the program, she was offered a job at The New England Insurance Company in Massachusetts — later MetLife Insurance. She worked there, gaining valuable skills as a Sr. Reinstatement Analyst, Payroll Tech, and in other positions before retiring with 33 years of company service. After retirement, Roma worked at Hebrew Sr. Life and Uphams Corner Health Center as a CNA for 10 years. Also, she worked seasonal employment at H&R Block for 10 years.

Roma was a member of the Welcome Baptist Church in Beckley, WV, and continued attending various churches in Massachusetts after she moved there. When she relocated back to West Virginia, she attended the Institute Church of the Nazarene in Institute whenever she was able. After only a short time there, she knew it was the church she wanted to be apart of and joined its membership.

Roma was free-spirited, laid-back, and quiet, yet she was opinionated. She brought joy and laughter to everyone around her. She always filled every room with warmth and could brighten even a crowded one with her infectious smile. She was passionate about cooking, using old family recipes passed down from her mom and grandma. She loved designing her own patterns, sewing unique garments, and selling them at flea markets. But Roma’s greatest joy was spending quality time with her family and friends and reminiscing about the good old days.

Roma was preceded in death by her parents, Harold D. and Eliza L. Nichols; brothers, Curtis D. and Harold J. Nichols; and sister, Gloria Ann Easley.

Roma is survived by her son, Ramon L. Nichols; her sisters, Sandra N. Price (Warren) of Charleston and Reva G. Nichols of Dunbar; three loving grandchildren; nephews; a niece; extended family members; and friends.

A heartfelt thank you is extended to all the medical personnel and facilities involved in Roma’s journey. Special appreciation goes to Roxia Mash for her unwavering dedication to Roma during her most challenging times over the last two years. Thanks also to the Hospice Hubbard House personnel who supported Roma through her most difficult time as she transitioned home. From the moment she entered the hospice facility, she was confident that she would receive the same compassion and care she had received from her family — and they didn’t disappoint her. The staff consistently fostered a peaceful environment of attentive care.

A celebration of Roma’s life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026, at the Institute Church of the Nazarene in Institute, West Virginia.

The family will receive visitors at the church one hour prior to the service.

Arrangements are in the care of Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested that donations be made to Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston, West Virginia.
