Obituary

Roy B. Knadler, 86, of Cross Lanes, left this earth and went to the Lord's Kingdom on Monday, December 26th, 2011.

Roy was born July 9, 1925 in Martinsburg to Carrie M. and Charles E. Knadler. He was preceded in death by his parents, older brothers, George and Charles (Bud) and sister, Doris.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce of 63 years and sister, Bernadine, 98, of Martinsburg. Also surviving are his son, Jeff Knadler and his wife, Lois; daughter, Karen Bishop and her husband, Gary; grandchildren, Valerie Covert, Jessica Waterman, Brent Bishop and Drew Knadler; great grandchildren, Ezekiel Knadler, Aiden Bishop and Grace Covert, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of extended church family, friends and wonderful neighbors.

A member of the greatest generation, Roy was drafted from high school into the US Marines during WW II and landed D+2 on the black volcanic ash beach of Iwo Jima, March 1945 and survived 35 days of unimaginable horror, witnessing death everywhere. He then was a part of the occupying forces in Nagasaki, Japan after the surrender and was discharged in 1946. Finding his way home working various jobs, he later joined the WV State Police as a trooper in 1953 to 1961. He joined the Midland Trail Masonic Lodge in 1958 and after moving to Cross Lanes he became a member of the Nitro Lodge, received his 32nd degree and joined the Scottish Rite. He entered the insurance business and retired from Underwriting Adjusting Company in 1988.

He enjoyed woodworking, traveling and cooking for family gatherings, the largest being the New Years Day Seafood Feast.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.,Thursday, December 29, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with the burial to follow at Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, December 28, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
