Sheliah Denice Payne, age 60, of Charleston, ascended to her heavenly home on Monday, April 13, 2015 at CAMC Memorial Hospital.
Sheliah was born on November 6, 1954 in Charleston, and received her education from Kanawha County Public Schools. She graduated from Dunbar High School in 1973 and received her Regents degree from West Virginia State University and her Master's degree from Mountain State University. Sheliah was first introduced to Christ at the Institute Church of the Nazarene and later joined First Baptist Church of Charleston. She was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
Sheliah worked at West Virginia State University in the office of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. She wore several hats in addition to her job title as Administrative Assistant. She was a mentor, mother, counselor, friend, advisor, teacher, and an overall life coach.
Family and friends were an important part of Sheliah's life. Her greatest attribute was her love and devotion for her family. She was a source of direction and strength for her children and grandchildren. Sheliah was united in marriage to Steven L. Payne for 28 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Reta Brothers.
She is survived by her husband, Steven; her children, Sheree Carter (Walter), Trina Sweeney (P.J.), Melanie Mills, Michelle Williams (Dorian) of Georgia and Aaron Mills; brother, Keith Brothers (Lisa); sisters, Valetia Tyree and Yolanda Brothers of Columbus, Ohio, Terri Sherrod (Clifford), and Vivian Nickerson (Earnest); aunts, Betty Booker and Elizabeth Smith (Philander); brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronald and Faye Payne, Levi and Cynthia Phillips, and Tyrone and Nichelle Wood; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Service will be held Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Institute Church of the Nazarene. Visitation will be at 2pm followed by the Celebration of life at 3pm.
