Shirley Wingo Sergent, 88, of Dunbar, WV went home to be with the Lord on Good Friday, March 29, 2024.
She was the daughter of the late Albert & Lillie Wingo and married to the late Ted Sergent, all of Dunbar.
Shirley was a 1953 graduate of Dunbar High School and retired from with C&P Telephone, Bell Atlantic, and Verizon after more than 41 years of service. She served as President, Telephone Pioneers of America, West Virginia Chapter 42 and currently served as Treasurer for Charleston's Life Member Chapter. She introduced the annual Easter Egg Hunt for the visibly impaired at WV State Capitol, served on the inaugural planning team to create the annual International Sports Jamboree for the Disabled at North Bend State Park. She was a member of Dunbar United Methodist Church for more than 65 years and served in United Methodist Women, Sanctuary Choir, and co-taught the Kindergarten Sunday School class for many years.
Shirley was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved her family, cooking, trying new recipes, traveling, and always mailing cards with handwritten notes to thousands over the years. Above all, Mom was a devoted Christian and follower of Jesus. Her kind, loving, and gentle soul welcomed many into her home over the years to break bread together, provide comfort, or simply sit on the front porch and admire her yard and home on 16th Street, where she resided for nearly 67 years.
In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley is preceded in death by her sister, Betty Bird and brother, Albert Wingo.
Left to cherish Shirley's legacy are sons, Michael (Julie), Elkview, WV and Gary (Shelly Prescott), Athens, GA; grandchildren, Adam and Austin; sister, Rose Peterson, Dunbar; along with nieces, nephews, and numerous friends, including her extended friends in Athens, Georgia.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday April 3, 2024 at Keller Funeral Home with the Reverend Jarrod Caltrider officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar, WV.
A visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar.
