Obituary

Shirley Madeline Ross Young, 92, of Dunbar, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at Putnam Center in Hurricane, surrounded by loving family members and caring staff.

She was born in Clendenin, on January 23, 1925, to Ledrew W. and Emma Jane Ross, and was their last surviving child. Shirley graduated from Clendenin High School in 1942 and attended business school in Charleston following graduation. She was employed part-time as a bookkeeper at her brother's furniture store in Spring Hill. On February 1, 1946, she married Eugene (Gene) K. Young and moved to Dunbar in 1950.

Shirley had an abundance of love, compassion, and generosity for her family, neighbors, and even strangers. Those qualities, along with her humble nature, endeared her to everyone. Her home became a refuge for family members in need. She was an enthusiastic follower of West Virginia University and Marshall University football and basketball, often closing her eyes, crossing her fingers, and saying a little prayer when the score was too close to bare.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Dunbar and a former member of Humphrey's United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 3, in St. Albans.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband of 64 years; her brothers, Lewis (Mike) Ross, Carl (Chink) Ross, Everett (Fess) Ross, James E. Ross, Willard (Kayo) Ross; sister, Lola Merle Ross; great-grandson and caregiver, Phillip Ross Board; and a special niece, Patricia Ross Carroll.

Shirley is survived by her children, Judith Young Steurer and her husband, David, of Florida, and Jeffrey Stuart Young and his wife, Yumi, of Maine. She cherished her grandchildren, Shawn Steurer Board of California, Kiffin Steurer of New York, Caleb Osborne of Tennessee, Sam Young of Maine; great-grandchildren, Ciara Board Jones, Micaela Board, Clemens Steurer, Wesley Steurer; and great-great-grandchildren, Cason Board and Shaelah Jones. She was also blessed with many nieces and nephews.

The family extends grateful appreciation to the staff at Putnam Center, and especially to her "girls," who showed her love, compassion, and respect. Many thanks to special friends who performed numerous acts of kindness over the years, Helen Hatcher, Craig Hatcher, Lena Trivison, Cheryl Anania, Josette Gryzberg; and family members, Marsha Postle, Bill Young, Janet Spry, Doug Spry, Brook Carroll.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21, at Koontz Cemetery in Clendenin with the Rev. Dr. Patricia Jarvis officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to First Presbyterian Church of Dunbar, 1414 Myers Ave., Dunbar, WV 25064 or HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., West, Charleston, WV 25387.
